Princess Arch and a Spectacular Late Day View
/Overview. This is one of the prettiest arches in Kentucky, and the hike comes with a few overlooks that were spectacular in the late day sun. While the trail has certainly suffered from heavy use, it remains a must-hike when visiting Red River Gorge.

Trailhead. Ample parking is available at the trailhead in marked spaces, along the cul-de-sac, and on Chimney Top Rock Road. [map]
Trail navigation. Move out on the trail and at the intersection, make a left to hike the loop part of the lollipop clockwise. As you move down and around, Princess Arch will come into view. I love the look from this approach. Once at the arch, take your time to explore below the arch before continuing the trail. Note that a number of user shortcut trails have developed (don’t shortcut marked trails) - continue out the ridgeline to find some overlooks of Red River Gorge. You’ll make your way back above the arch and return to the trailhead.
CAUTION - Steep, loose soil and cliff. Along the north side of Princess Arch, a path leads down a steep grade with loose dirt and a large cliff. I suggest keeping kids away from this area, as it’s easy to slip and slide in regular street shoes.
CAUTION - Cliffs. Be careful to avoid getting too close the edge of cliffs. This hike may not be suitable for younger children.
CAUTION - Poisonous snakes. Timber rattlesnakes and copperheads can be found in the region. Stay alert on the trail, as snakes are commonly found taking in the warmth of the trail. Give them a wide berth or wait for them to move off the trail.
CAUTION - Bears. Black bears are growing in number throughout Daniel Boone National Forest. Be sure to follow bear safety precautions. [Be Bear Aware by US Forest Service]
