Doe Run Lake Loop
/Overview. The southern section of this loop is on single/double track dirt/mud trails and is both rugged and beautiful. The northern section is gravel double track with a few benches and picnic tables overlooking the lake. There are numerous challenges for hikers that complete the loop. For an easy hike, head to the southern section and turnaround at the badly damaged bridge. And, this is a great spot for sunset!

Trailhead. The trailhead for this hike is off Bullock Pen Road just past the dam. [map]
Trial navigation. The trail is relatively easy to follow - just stay near the lake. Numerous side trails exist moving uphill to neighborhoods and downhill to the lake. Start by taking the trail behind the pit toilet and turn right onto the bridge. Continue to make your way around the lake - taking high routes where the trail has eroded down into the lake/creek. As you make your way around, you will eventually leave the lake and need to cross Doe Run. I took my crossing quite a bit further upstream after seeing a few things of interest. Take care to cross where the water is shallow and not fast moving. In drier times, this is a simple walk across the rocks in the stream bed. Once across Doe Run, you’ll pick-up some double track grass trail that becomes gravel to finish the loop back to the parking lot.
CAUTION - Bridge Damage. One bridge in particular took substantial damage. The support logs are quite large and strong, but the decking above it is questionable in places. You can cross the stream instead without using the bridge.
CAUTION - Heavily Eroded Trail. There are large sections on the southern portion of the hike that are heavily eroded with trail sections slipping into the lake/stream. User re-routes are obvious in most of these places and generally move to higher ground. Take care when wet, as footing can be quite slick.
CAUTION - Landslides Possible. There is abundance evidence of minor landslides in the area. Use caution during persistent wet periods and turnaround if it feels unsafe.
CAUTION - Possible Homeless Camp. Past the lake along Doe Run, there was what appeared to be a homeless camp. I dropped down into the dry portion of the stream bed to leave a wide berth. And periodically checked behind me to ensure I wasn’t followed.
