Come celebrate the New Year with New Adventures in Red River Gorge! We’ll thoroughly enjoy our happiest place while staying in the warm, comfy confines of BedRock RRG. Enjoy a classic cheap champagne (err…sparkling wine) toast, some of the best hiking in Kentucky, and plenty of hot, hearty meals to keep you going.
After ringing in 2020 at the Gorge, we’re going to make it an annual tradition to opt outside and get each year started off with beautiful trails, sandstone arches, and of course, waterfalls!

What’s Included
Basically, you just need to show up and finish the hikes - we’ll take care of the rest!
Lodging. Our home away from home is at BedRock RRG - a clean, modern, inviting hostel, and a real gem in the Commonwealth. Sitting on a nice piece of property just up the road from Muir Valley, BedRock has a cozy, comfortable feel with a large community space and lots of subtle touches. There is a large fire pit and each room has its own exit to the outside.
Meals. Over the winter months, nearly all restaurants are closed. We’ll provide all meals over the course of the weekend. You can expect a lot of hearty foods including chili, soups, and stews for dinner and classic hot breakfasts each morning. Before we head out for our day hike on Friday, you can pack your own trail lunch that typically includes jerky, trail bars, PB&J, hummus wraps, etc.
Hikes. We’ll plan a number of hikes for the weekend that you can enjoy with the group, or you can choose to go off on your own to someplace new:-) If you choose the solo option, we’ll provide hike details if available including trailhead directions, hike navigation, and GPS waypoints.
Post-Hike Chillaxing. So long as it's not raining, we’ll be spending a good bit of time around the fire. With sunset coming early, we’ll make our own light with a roaring campfire:-) Should Mother Nature have other plans, we’ll be indoors enjoying the wood stove, shuffleboard, and some good conversation.
BYOB. We wouldn’t dare presume whether you’re a Bud Light or IPA kind of hiker, so please bring your own libations;-)
COVID-19 Practices
By the time this event rolls around, COVID-19 will still be with us:-) As a result, we will be following recommended guidelines that currently include keeping 6 ft. of distance, wearing masks when 6 ft. of distance isn’t possible, and sanitizing like it’s our greatest obsession. So, if you’re not into following guidelines, this event is not for you. Also, if you are immuno-compromised or otherwise in at-risk categories, please follow CDC guidance and remain healthy at home.
So, what’s it like bringing hikers together in the COVID Era? Pretty much the same as it ever was - there’s just a few more feet between us. Ultimately, we’ll be spending a ton of time outdoors where there’s plenty of space to move about. When we’re indoors, it’s a matter of commonsense. If you’re going to be in close contact with others, mask up. Pretty easy stuff.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cancellation/refund policy for this trip?
With a small group event like this, we do not offer refunds. That said, if you find that you can’t make it, we will do our best to fill your spot. If we’re able to get your spot filled, you will receive a refund for the amount paid, less transaction fees.
Is it the same price whether I have one or two people in a room?
Yes. The price is for the room, and you can have one or two persons in there.
Are children allowed to participate?
No. This is an adults only experience and all participants must be at least 21 years of age.
How difficult will the hiking be?
The hikes we have planned are a highlight reel of Red River Gorge and require a solid effort. This won’t be soul crushing backpacking in the deep woods, but it’s also not a series of drive-up hikes from a tour bus.
What if the weather sucks?
Hiking, of course, is weather dependent. We’ll hike rain or shine unless severe weather is expected in the area. As a rule, winters in Kentucky are wet, and that’s why it’s waterfall season! And, we’ll definitely be seeing some waterfalls across the weekend.
I’ve never hiked in the Winter, what can I expect?
Winter is my favorite time to hike! Fewer people, underbrush is dead - meaning you can explore more, and of course, it’s prime time for waterfalls. But really, there are two main differences - cooler temps and wet ground. Should you decide to join us on this adventure, we’ll send you a full gear list with recommended clothing and footwear. As someone who spends most of the winter outside skiing, hiking, and running, clothing and footwear are by far the most important. As a rule, it’s all about layers, wicking vs. insulating fabrics, and finding the right sock/footwear combination. Once you get your clothing right, Winter might become your favorite hiking season too!
Will there be bathrooms and showers?
Yes. BedRock is super clean and very modern - complete with bathrooms and showers. There are three showers each in the men’s and women’s bathrooms.
What if I have to poop on a hike?
Mike will show you how to dig a cathole, employ a yogi squat, and bury your treasure! If you’re nice, he’ll show you to a nice tree to hug:-) There is no shame among hikers! Oh, and with COVID, those will be freshly sanitized hands and masks for both - maybe some toothpaste on the mask for odor control!
